7 Efficient Go Tricks The Official Docs Don't Tell You

Go's syntax is indeed simple, but relying solely on "syntax sugar" isn't enough to write high-performance code for production environments. Often, writing code that runs is just the passing grade; writing code that is high-performance, memory-friendly, and easy to maintain is the real threshold.

To save time and hassle on configuration, I recently switched my local setup to ServBay. Its biggest benefit is the one-click installation for all versions from Go 1.11 to Go 1.24. Once the environment is settled, let's focus back on the code itself and discuss a few practical Go techniques that are often overlooked.

1. Slice Pre-Allocation

This is the most basic yet most easily ignored performance optimization point. Many people are used to declaring var data []int and then immediately starting a loop to append.

The code runs, but the underlying mechanics are messy. When the Go runtime discovers that the capacity is insufficient, it has to request a larger block of memory, copy the old data over, and then hand the old memory over to the Garbage Collector (GC). In loops with large amounts of data, this causes significant memory allocation and CPU consumption.

Inefficient approach:

If you can estimate the capacity, always use make([]T, 0, cap). This not only reduces CPU consumption but also significantly lowers GC pressure.

2. Beware of Slice Memory Aliasing

A Slice is essentially a view of an underlying array. When you perform a reslicing operation on a Slice, the new Slice and the original Slice share the same underlying array.

If the original array is very large and you only need a small part of it, directly slicing it will cause the entire large array to remain in memory (preventing GC), resulting in a memory leak. Alternatively, modifying the new Slice will unexpectedly affect the original data.

Problematic Code:

origin := []int{10, 20, 30, 40, 50}
sub := origin[:2] // sub and origin share the underlying array

If you need data isolation or want to prevent memory leaks, please use copy or the idiom append([]T(nil), origin[:n]...).

3. Utilize Struct Embedding for Composition

Go does not have traditional inheritance, but through Struct Embedding, you can achieve similar effects with greater flexibility. The methods of the embedded field are promoted directly to the outer struct, making them callable as if they were the outer struct's own methods.

This approach makes the code structure flatter and aligns with Go's design philosophy of "Composition over Inheritance."

4. Defer is Not Just for Closing Files

Many people only remember to use defer when doing File.Close(). However, in concurrent programming, it is a powerful tool against deadlocks.

For example, when using a Mutex, the scariest scenario is having an if err != nil { return } in the middle of a function where you forget to unlock, causing the entire program to hang.

Since Go 1.14, the performance overhead of defer is negligible. You can use it with confidence in most I/O scenarios.

5. Use iota for Elegant Enums

Although Go has no enum type, the iota constant counter solves this problem well. Combined with custom types and a String() method, you can implement type-safe and readable enums.

6. High Concurrency Counting? Atomic is Faster than Mutex

For simple counters or status flags, using sync.Mutex is overkill. The contention for locks brings the overhead of context switching. Atomic operations provided by the sync/atomic package are completed at the hardware instruction level and are extremely efficient.

In scenarios with extremely high concurrency, Atomic operations usually perform better than Mutex.

7. Interface Embedding for Mock Testing

Mocking a large interface when writing unit tests is troublesome. By embedding small interfaces to compose a large interface, you can allow Mock objects to implement only the necessary methods.

During testing, you only need to implement the Read and Write methods to satisfy the ReadWriter interface, without inheriting from any complex base class.


Go's philosophy is "Less is More," but mastering these details allows you to write more robust code within the constrained syntax. Whether it's memory layout control or the choice of concurrency primitives, it requires a lot of practice.
