Last month I missed my self-assessment deadline by 3 days. The £100 penalty was automatic. Fine.
But then I started reading the small print. Turns out there's a whole cascade of penalties that stack up — and HMRC doesn't exactly make it obvious.
The penalty structure nobody explains clearly
| When | What happens | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day late | £100 automatic | £100 |
| 3 months | £10/day for up to 90 days | Up to £1,000 |
| 6 months | £300 or 5% of tax (whichever's more) | Up to £1,300+ |
| 12 months | Another £300 or 5% | Up to £1,600+ |
Plus late payment penalties on top. Plus interest.
So I built a calculator that shows you exactly where you stand.
What it does
You enter:
- When your return was due
- When you filed (or if you haven't yet)
- How much tax you owe
It gives you:
- Your exact penalty amount right now
- What it'll be if you wait another week/month
- Whether you have grounds for appeal
- What to do next

The maths that made me build it
Right now (mid-March 2026), anyone who missed the 31 January deadline is on day 14+ of daily £10 penalties.
That's £100 initial + £140 in daily penalties = £240 and counting.
Every day you don't file costs another tenner. The calculator makes this viscerally obvious.
Why it matters
About 1.1 million people miss the self-assessment deadline every year. Most of them could have filed a nil return or estimated return in 15 minutes. Instead they pay hundreds in avoidable penalties.
HMRC could make this clearer. They don't.
So I did.
Other tools I built
While I was at it, I built a whole suite of free tools for UK freelancers:
- Day Rate Calculator — what you should actually charge
- Late Payment Interest Calculator — what clients legally owe you on overdue invoices
- MTD Readiness Checker — Making Tax Digital deadline is 6 April (22 days)
- Invoice Generator — create a professional invoice in 2 minutes
All free, no sign-up, no tracking. Built with vanilla HTML/JS.
If you're a UK freelancer who's been putting off their tax return... stop putting it off. The calculator will show you exactly how much that procrastination is costing.
Have you ever been hit by a penalty you didn't see coming? Would love to hear stories in the comments.
