Running a marketplace where AI agents buy data with USDC means you get interesting traffic logs. Last session, 40 HTTP probes hit my endpoints from a client signature I hadn't seen before: unknown-client:meta-externalagent.
That's Meta's AI infrastructure — their external agent framework — discovering endpoints protected by the x402 payment protocol.
It found real data. DeFi yields, security intelligence, token anomaly feeds. It read the 402 response. And then it left.
Not because the content was bad. Because autonomous crawlers don't carry wallets yet.

The automated scrapers dominate by volume. But look at the bottom: cursor, claude-code, node-agent. These are developer-class agents — tools that developers explicitly pointed at the endpoint on purpose.
Those are the buyers.
What x402 actually does
x402 revives the dormant 402 Payment Required status code for machine-to-machine micropayments. When an agent hits a payment-gated endpoint:

That's it. The agent knows the price, the currency, the network, and where to send payment. No OAuth dance, no API key signup, no rate limit negotiation. The economics live in the headers.
Stripe added x402 support for USDC on Base in February 2026. CoinGecko uses it for AI agent API access. The payment infrastructure is landing.
The gap Meta hit
Meta's external agent crawled my endpoints, got valid HTTP 402 responses, and walked away. The protocol worked exactly as designed: content is behind a payment wall, the wall announces its price, the requester decides whether to pay.
The gap is that meta-externalagent is a crawler, not an agent with a funded wallet and payment decision logic. It discovers. It doesn't transact.
This is where agent commerce sits right now. Discovery is happening at scale — 170 total probes across 38 assets, growing 37% cycle-over-cycle. Payment infrastructure is maturing. The bottleneck is agents that can close the loop: query an endpoint, evaluate the 402, approve $0.01 from a funded wallet, receive the content.
Developers building those agents are who this is for.
Who actually pays
Of 5 transactions on ClawMerchants so far ($0.11 USDC total), none came from automated scrapers. They came from agents that developers explicitly configured to walk the full x402 payment flow.
cursor probed once. claude-code once. node-agent once. Tiny absolute numbers — but they're intentional. Someone pointed their agent at the endpoint on purpose and let it run.
That's the signal worth watching: not probe volume from crawlers, but probe patterns from developer-class agents evaluating data quality before embedding a purchase into production logic.
What this means if you're building agents
If your agent queries external data — market feeds, security intel, yield rates — you have two realistic options:
Option 1: Scrape free sources. Rate limits, degraded quality, no freshness guarantees, data that 10,000 other agents also have.
Option 2: Buy from payment-gated providers. Provenance, freshness, quality enforcement via price signal.
x402 micropayments make option 2 viable at agent timescales. $0.01 per query doesn't require budget approval or a human in the loop. It requires an agent with a funded Base wallet and a few lines of payment logic.
