When I first started building APIs in Go, I quickly realized that JSON processing could become a major bottleneck. In high-traffic systems, even small inefficiencies in how data is converted to and from JSON can add up to significant delays. Over time, I've developed a set of techniques that dramatically improve performance, and I want to share these with you in a straightforward way.
JSON is everywhere in web development. It's the language APIs use to talk to each other. But in Go, the standard way of handling JSON can be slow if not done carefully. This matters because fast APIs mean better user experiences and lower server costs.
Let me start with the basics. Serialization is the process of turning Go data structures into JSON strings. Deserialization is the reverse—converting JSON back into Go data. Both operations can eat up CPU time and memory if not optimized.
In my projects, I focus on three main areas: how I design my data structures, which libraries I use, and how I manage memory. By paying attention to these, I've seen performance improvements of five to ten times in some cases.
Here's a simple example of a user struct that I might use in an API. Notice how I use tags to control the JSON output. Tags are little hints to the JSON encoder about how to handle each field.

The json:"id,string" tag tells Go to treat the ID as a string in JSON, even though it's an integer in Go. This avoids precision issues with large numbers. Similarly, json:"balance,string" does the same for the balance field. This small change can prevent headaches when dealing with different systems.
I also use omitempty to skip fields that are empty. This makes the JSON smaller and faster to process. For instance, if I have a field that's not always used, I can mark it with omitempty to leave it out when it's zero or empty.
Memory management is another big piece. Every time you create a new byte slice for JSON data, you're allocating memory. In a busy API, this can lead to a lot of garbage collection, which slows everything down. To combat this, I use a technique called pooling.
Pooling lets me reuse memory instead of constantly allocating new chunks. Here's how I set up a simple pool for byte buffers.

Now, let's talk about libraries. The standard Go library for JSON is good, but it's not the fastest. I often use a library called jsoniter, which is designed for speed. It works similarly to the standard library but with optimizations under the hood.
Here's how I integrate jsoniter into my processor.

By setting EscapeHTML to false, I avoid extra processing if I don't need HTML escaping. Similarly, not sorting map keys can save time. Jsoniter uses code generation to create efficient marshaling code at runtime, which is faster than using reflection all the time.
When I marshal data, I use the pool to get a buffer and then marshal into it. This avoids creating new slices repeatedly.

Deserialization works similarly. I use jsoniter to unmarshal JSON back into Go structs quickly.

Another technique I use is batch processing. If I have multiple objects to serialize, I do them in parallel. This leverages multiple CPU cores and can speed things up significantly.

In this code, I use goroutines to marshal each user concurrently. The sync.WaitGroup ensures I wait for all goroutines to finish before returning the results. This can improve throughput by three to five times compared to doing it one by one.
To keep track of performance, I add simple statistics. This helps me understand how well my optimizations are working and where I might need to improve.

I use atomic operations to update counters without locking, which is efficient. Then, I can retrieve stats to see how many operations I've done and the average time per operation.
In production, I also think about security. For example, I limit the size of JSON inputs to prevent memory exhaustion attacks. I might set a maximum size for the JSON data I accept.

This function checks the size before unmarshaling, which helps protect against malicious inputs.
Another best practice is to precompute schemas for known types. If I know all the structs I'll be using at startup, I can generate efficient code for them ahead of time. Jsoniter supports this through type encoders.

This tells jsoniter to prepare encoders for these types, reducing runtime overhead.
When I deploy these optimizations, I see real benefits. Response times drop from milliseconds to microseconds for small objects. Memory usage goes down because I'm reusing buffers. The system handles more requests with the same resources.
Let me walk through a complete example to tie it all together. Suppose I have an API that handles user data. I want to serialize a list of users quickly.
First, I define my optimized struct.

In my tests, this approach often reduces JSON processing time to less than 10% of the total request duration. That's a huge win for API performance.
I also consider fallbacks. For instance, if jsoniter isn't available, I might have a switch to use the standard library. But in practice, jsoniter is reliable and widely used.
Another tip is to use Protocol Buffers or other binary formats for internal services where JSON isn't required. But for public APIs, JSON is still the king, so optimizing it is essential.
Throughout my work, I've learned that small changes add up. Using the right tags, reusing memory, and picking fast libraries make a big difference. I always profile my code to see where the bottlenecks are and focus on the hot paths.
For example, I might use Go's built-in profiling tools to see how much time is spent in JSON functions.
