Condensation often occurs when providing humidified respiratory support. We examined conditions conducive to excess water formation in heated humified high-flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC).

An HHHFNC device, at 35 or 37°C, was attached with a nasal cannula to a reservoir and tested in five ambient conditions and flows. For Group A, tubing and collection bottle remained at room temperature (23°C). Group B, tubing and reservoir remained inside an incubator (31°C). Group C, tubing and reservoir remained at 33°C. In Group D, the HHHFNC was set to 35°C, the reservoir remained at 33°C, and the nasal cannula and tubing remained at 23°C. Group E, same as D, with HHHFNC at 37°C.

The largest amounts of collected water were in groups A and E. Both had highest temperature differences. Median (range) was 4.9°C (4.1-6.9) and 4.0°C, collecting 38.4 (26.4-50.4) and 26.4 (19.2-50.4)ml/24h, respectively. Smallest amounts of water were seen with lower temperature differences as in groups B, C, and D with 2.7 (1.9-4.7), 1.6 (1.2-2.1), and 2.0°C with 8.4 (0.0-33.6), 2.4 (0.0-14.4), and 9.6 (4.8-16.8)ml/24h, respectively.

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is used in children beyond neonatal age, but systematic investigations have been lacking. This mini-review summarised aEEG studies on children aged one month to 18years, evaluated the usefulness of aEEG and identified knowledge gaps or limitations.

We searched the PubMed database for articles published in English up to September 2020, and 23 papers were identified.

aEEG was frequently used to compensate for the absence of continuous full-channel EEG monitoring, particularly for detecting seizures. Interpreting background patterns was based on neonatal classifications, as reference values for older infants and children are lacking. It is possible that aEEG could predict outcomes after paediatric cardiac arrests and other conditions. click here Gaps in our knowledge exist with regard to normal values in healthy children and the effects of sedation on aEEG background patterns in children.

The main application of aEEG was detecting and treating paediatric seizures. Further research should determine reference values and investigate the potential to predict outcome after critical events or in acute neurological disease. It is likely that aEEG will play a role in paediatric critical care in the future.

To search the literature and to critically evaluate the findings on the periodontal outcomes of restorations and tooth-supported fixed prostheses.

PubMed was searched according to a systematic methodology, previously reported, but updated to include a larger database. Filters applied were Case reports, clinical trial, review, guideline, randomized controlled trial, meta-analysis, systematic reviews, and English. A narrative review was then synthesized to discuss periodontal outcomes related to restorations and tooth-supported fixed prostheses. Relevant data was organized into four sections Direct restorations, indirect restorations, biologic width or supracrestal tissue attachment and tooth preparation/finish line design.

While increased gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth and clinical attachment loss have been associated with subgingival restorations, intracrevicular margins do not cause periodontal diseases. Inflammation and bone loss occur, for both direct and indirect restorations, ons and materials used for the placement and fabrication of tooth-supported restorations and fixed prostheses are compatible with periodontal health when adequate patient education and motivation in self-performed oral hygiene are present. Periodontal diagnostic criteria should be thoroughly reviewed before fixed restorative treatments are planned and executed.A common pattern observed in temperate tree clades is that species are often morphologically distinct and partially interfertile but maintain species cohesion despite ongoing hybridization where ranges overlap. Although closely related species commonly occur in sympatry in tropical ecosystems, little is known about patterns of hybridization within a clade over time, and the implications of this hybridization for the maintenance of species boundaries. In this study, we focused on a clade of sympatric trees in the genus Diospyros in the Mascarene islands and investigated whether species are genetically distinct, whether they hybridize, and how patterns of hybridization are related to the time since divergence among species. We sampled multiple populations from each of 12 Mascarene Diospyros species, generated genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data using 2bRADseq, and conducted population genomic and phylogenomic analyses. We found that Mascarene Diospyros species diverged millions of years ago and are today largely genetically distinct from one another. Although hybridization was observed between closely related species belonging to the same subclade, more distantly related species showed little evidence of interspecific hybridization. Phylogenomic analyses also suggested that introgression has occurred during the evolutionary history of the clade. This suggests that, as diversification progressed, interspecific hybridization occurred among species, but became infrequent as lineages diverged from one another and evolved reproductive barriers. Species now coexist in partial sympatry, and experience limited hybridization between close relatives. Additional research is needed to better understand the role that introgression may have played in adaptation and diversification of Mascarene Diospyros, and its relevance for conservation.click here
