Exams and certifications can be great ways of helping you learn something and also proving to others that you have a certain skill. They aren't the be the only way to learn or the only indicator of skills but they are part of the process.
Over the last few years I've sat a number of Microsoft certifications. And I've increasingly found it more convenient to sit the exams at home instead of travelling to a test centre.
