The Problem No One Talks About
Every year, millions of students, indie developers, and startup founders push code to GitHub. But here’s what the data shows:
372 million+ total projects exist on GitHub.
Only 5.5 million are connected to any form of monetization (via GitHub Sponsors, OpenCollective, Patreon, etc).
Only 7.4 million receive recognition (defined as having >100 stars, forks, trending mentions, or blog features).
But the truly successful ones — projects that are both monetized and recognized — are just ~500,000.
That's only 0.13% of all open-source projects.
