You didn't notice when it happened.
Neither did I.
That's how tools work.
They don't announce the changes they make to you.
They just — over time — make them.
McLuhan called it "the medium is the message."
Most people skipped past that line.
What he meant was simple:
the tool you use reshapes you more than the content ever will.
Slack was built to cut down email.
It did that.
But it also built something else —
a culture of constant availability.
Nobody wrote that into the spec.
The tool just made not-responding feel like disengagement.
GPS was built to help you navigate.
It did that too.
But studies show consistent GPS use
quietly erodes spatial memory over time.
The brain outsourced the map.
And slowly forgot how to draw one.
Social media algorithms were built to keep you engaged.
They succeeded.
But the side effect —
shorter attention spans, narrower thinking —
wasn't in the roadmap.
The pattern is the same every time.
A tool solves a real problem.
People use it.
The tool works.
And somewhere in the background,
it's also working on them.
The question isn't whether to build.
It's whether, at some point in the process,
someone asks:
What does this make people become?
Not in a dramatic way.
Just honestly.
Because the tools that shape culture the most
are rarely the ones that tried to.
They're the ones that didn't think to ask.
