Breaking the Borders of Traditional Payment Systems

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

The traditional platforms that we were familiar with were not only limited in terms of their geographical reach but also extracted exorbitant fees from creators. It was heartbreaking to see talented individuals being stripped of their hard-earned income due to arbitrary location-based restrictions. We knew that we had to break free from this outdated model and create a system that would empower creators to get paid fairly, regardless of their location.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

Initially, we experimented with integrating popular payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal into our system. While they offered a seamless user experience, we soon discovered that they were not designed with creators from emerging markets in mind. The fees associated with these platforms were prohibitively high, and the complex web of rules and regulations governing cross-border transactions proved to be a nightmare to navigate. We realized that we needed to look beyond traditional payment platforms if we were to achieve our goal.

The Architecture Decision

After extensive research, we decided to implement a custom-built payment solution using the Unchained Commerce protocol. This blockchain-based protocol allowed us to bypass traditional payment gateways and establish a direct connection between creators and their customers. By utilizing Unchained Commerce, we were able to reduce transaction fees to a mere 1.5%, making our platform an attractive option for creators worldwide.

What The Numbers Said After

The results were nothing short of astonishing. Within the first six months of launching our new payment system, we saw a 300% increase in global transactions, with creators from over 150 countries using our platform to sell their digital products. We also noticed a significant decrease in the number of abandoned transactions, thanks to the seamless and secure payment experience offered by Unchained Commerce. The data was unequivocal - our new payment system was a game-changer for creators everywhere.

What I Would Do Differently

In retrospect, I would have liked to explore alternative options, such as using decentralized payment networks like Dai or MakerDAO. These networks offer a more decentralized approach to payment processing, which could have potentially reduced our reliance on a single protocol like Unchained Commerce. However, at the time, the complexity of implementing such a system would have added significant overhead to our already tight project timeline. Still, it's a decision that I would consider in the future, especially as the landscape of digital payments continues to evolve.
