I’ve spent most of my career in sales and marketing. I know how buyers think, what questions they ask, and how they evaluate products before making a decision.
So when AI chat interfaces started showing up in how people research tools, I paid attention. Not as an engineer — as someone who’s watched buyer behavior shift for years.
I decided to run a simple experiment. I opened ChatGPT and typed the kind of question a buyer might ask:
“What’s the best tool for [my category]?”
My product wasn’t mentioned.
Fine. Maybe too broad. So I tried the exact pain point my product solves. Still nothing. Then I searched my product name directly.
What came back was outdated, partially wrong, and described a version of my product that doesn’t exist.
I did the same on Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. Each surface told a slightly different story. None of them matched what’s actually on my website.
As someone who spent years obsessing over how buyers find and evaluate products — this felt like a fire alarm going off.
Why this matters more than you think
In sales you learn fast that you can’t control what a buyer hears about you before they walk in the room. References, reviews, word of mouth — it all shapes the conversation before you even start it.

I started checking weekly. Copy-paste the same queries into four different AI systems. Screenshot the results. Compare them to what I know is true about my product.
It took about two hours every week and I hated every minute of it.

This is something I noticed too. When I searched my own tools site, each AI gave a different and sometimes wrong explanation. It made me realize AI doesn’t understand your product unless your content is very clear and consistent everywhere. Your idea of tracking and fixing those gaps is really useful, especially for founders who rely on organic discovery.
