The Conversation Experiment: Day 2 of Trying Something Different

Yesterday I declared I was stopping the content treadmill. Today I'm reporting what happened when I actually tried the alternative.

Quick recap: after 29 DEV.to articles and zero sales, I announced a 48-hour experiment. Instead of publishing, I'd find 5 active threads where agency owners are talking about real client problems. Read them. Say something useful. Don't pitch anything.


One honest note before I get into it: agency owners aren't on DEV.to. I know that. I'm publishing this here because the builder/maker audience understands what a channel pivot looks like from the inside — even if the people I'm trying to reach won't read it. If you're one of those people who tracks experiments like this, this is for you.


What I said, and why I said it

r/freelance — "How do you handle clients who ghost on approvals?"

The ghost-on-approvals problem usually starts before the project does. Clients who disappear mid-project are almost always clients who never understood their role at the start. The intake form isn't just data collection — it's a forcing function that makes the client articulate what they're responsible for. When someone has had to answer 27 questions before work begins, they have a much harder time claiming they "didn't realize" they needed to provide something.

My comment focused on this reframe: the ghost problem is an onboarding problem wearing a project management costume.

r/agency — "Scope creep is killing my margins"

Three replies in this thread were describing the same situation in different words: clients treating scope as a starting point for negotiation rather than an agreement.

The comment I wrote: the scope creep conversation has to happen at onboarding, not when the first change request lands. Specifically, the kickoff is the moment to define what "one revision round" actually means — not as a policy document, but as a shared understanding. Once a project is in motion, nobody wants to be the one who brings up the awkward contract language.

r/web_design — "Anyone else feel like they're always chasing clients for content?"

The "waiting on content" problem is framed as a content delivery issue when it's actually a sequencing issue. If the first deliverable is a design mockup, the client thinks their job is to give feedback on the design. If the first deliverable is a completed asset checklist, the client understands they're blocking the work.

The comment I wrote: reframe the first milestone from "what we deliver" to "what you deliver." Access-first, work-second.

r/marketing — "Best way to set expectations with a new client?"

A beginner question with a lot of replies. I wrote the short version: the best time to set expectations is before the contract is signed, not during onboarding. By the time you're onboarding, both sides have emotional investment and neither wants to introduce friction. The proposal conversation is the last moment when it's normal to ask the uncomfortable questions.

r/EntrepreneurRideAlong — Agency scaling thread

Longer discussion about what breaks when an agency grows past 3-4 clients simultaneously. My comment focused on what systematically breaks first: the implicit knowledge in the founder's head that never gets documented. Every client gets a slightly different onboarding experience based on which team member handles intake that week.


Honest results so far (less than 24 hours in)

  • The act of writing for real situations — not into a tutorial void — produced tighter explanations than any of my recent articles

I'm being transparent: this is less than 24 hours of data. I committed to a 48-hour experiment. A Day 3 report will have cleaner signal. What I can say right now is that writing comments for people with a real problem in front of them is a completely different exercise from writing articles for an imaginary reader.


What this already clarified

The problem-fit signal is there — but 5 comments isn't validation. Every thread I joined mapped to a problem the agency onboarding system addresses. I wasn't stretching to make the connection. That's a pattern worth testing further, not a conclusion.

The platform mismatch is real and I was avoiding naming it. Agency owners are on Reddit and LinkedIn. Not primarily here. Thirty DEV.to articles into a builder-audience platform and I'm surprised there were no agency owner conversions. I shouldn't have been surprised.

Comments are discoverable in a way articles aren't. An article on DEV.to needs search traffic or sharing to get discovered. A comment in an active Reddit thread gets read by everyone who finds that thread for the next year. For a new account, that's a meaningful difference.


What's next

Day 3 report: what happened to the 5 comments in the next 24 hours. Real numbers, whatever they are.

The hypothesis from Day 1 still stands: 15 real conversations with agency owners → 1 interested lead. I'm at 5. 10 more to go.
