No doubt, learning Java requires planning and discipline in sticking to the plan. This is one of the secrets of successful professional programmers. How do you achieve this?
- Make a schedule for your education and find ways to minimize distractions. You need to discipline yourself by strictly following the schedule.
- Ask the right questions. Not every question is necessary and requires a solution. Ask relevant questions in order to get helpful solutions.
- Start with the basics. If you are a beginner, start from the basics. Don’t jump onto just any level, no matter how simple it may seem.

Books should be references, not guide. I love the Bible version or the Syntax Reference of whatever language I'm learning (my technique is described here) But first I start with an interesting problem or idea I have and try to solve it. Then whenever I'm stuck, I skip to the part of the book that contains an explanation.
I don't watch video-based tutorials for this reason, (they are too slow and I'm not involved enough).
I did the vast majority of my Java learning this way, by forcing myself to make the widget (game engine) and all the assets that go with it myself. I sure learned a lot, and I now consider myself in the 90% club for "Secrets of Java Swing GUI Creation" due to having done it so much. Well worth the time invested.
With the rise in video based tutorials , the practice of not coding is more now .
Though I don't agree that books can be fully bad. They do give a structure, but like you said they should be used to help in coding and not read and then code .
