Rohan, a 15-year-old from Delhi, was addicted to an online cricket game that all his school friends played. One evening, while playing a ranked match, he got a message in the in-game chat:

“Bro, new IPL-themed skins are out. You won’t find them in the store. Here’s the link—limited offer!”

The link looked convincing. The page had the game’s logo, player images, and even a fake countdown that said “Only 2 hours left.” Excited, Rohan entered his game login details.

By the next day, he couldn’t access his account. His profile was sold, his in-game purchases were gone, and worse—because his father’s UPI was linked to the account, someone tried making payments through it. Luckily, the bank flagged the suspicious transactions in time.

What felt like a harmless shortcut for a cool skin became a lesson in digital safety.

🔍 Real Case: PUBG Mobile Tournament Scam in India

Several Indian teens fell victim to fake PUBG Mobile tournaments and “UC (Unknown Cash)” offers. Scammers created WhatsApp groups promising big prize pools or free UC coins. Players were asked to pay a small “entry fee” or share their login details to participate.

Many lost money, and some even had their Google Play accounts compromised, leading to unauthorized purchases. These scams were reported in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra, where parents complained after unusual transactions appeared in bank accounts.

🎭 Riya’s Chat Disaster: When Online Friends Turn Dangerous

Riya, a 14-year-old student, loved playing online games after school. One evening, she received a friend request from someone who seemed funny and friendly. Soon, they were chatting daily in the game’s private messages.

Over time, the “friend” began asking for personal photos and even convinced Riya to share her phone number. She thought it was harmless—just friendly conversation—but things quickly escalated.

Within days, Riya’s parents started receiving threatening messages demanding money. What began as innocent gaming fun turned into a terrifying real-life situation.

🔍 Real Case: Online Gamers Extort ₹14 Lakh from Panchkula Teen

In August 2025, a 14-year-old boy from Panchkula, Haryana, was extorted of ₹14 lakh by individuals he met during online gaming sessions. The perpetrators threatened and coerced him into transferring the amount from a family member’s bank account. The boy eventually informed his family, leading to police involvement. Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and investigations are underway to trace and arrest the accused.

🎯 Phishing Links in Chat – Fake links promising rewards, skins, or in-game currency can steal login credentials or install malware.

💬 Dangerous In-Game Chat & Social Engineering – Predators can use game chats to befriend players, gain trust, and manipulate them into sharing sensitive information.

✅ Download only from official sources (Steam, Play Store, App Store, Epic Games).
✅ Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on gaming accounts.
✅ Avoid clicking suspicious links in game chats, emails, or pop-ups.
✅ Never share personal information (phone number, email, school name, photos) with online “friends.”
✅ Use strong, unique passwords for each game or platform.
✅ Educate kids & teens about scams, phishing, and online predators.
✅ Set up parental controls to monitor younger players’ activity.
✅ Keep antivirus software and systems updated.
✅ Verify tournament offers or “free loot” websites via official channels before entering credentials.
