Your Digital Life Is Your Insurance Score: How AI Behavioral Profiling Is Reinventing Risk

Your insurance company has never met you. They've never watched you drive, seen your kitchen, or sat with you in a doctor's office.

But they know you.

They know you searched for "chest pain left arm" at 2 AM last October. They know you bought cigarettes at a gas station in March and nicotine patches in April. They know your car idles in a parking lot outside a casino every other Thursday. They know you drive 12 mph over the speed limit on the highway but slow to 5 under in school zones. They know your credit score, your shopping patterns, your social media sentiment, and the precise neighborhood block where your house sits — including its flood proximity and the crime statistics within a quarter-mile.

They bought all of this. Legally. From data brokers who assembled it from dozens of sources you never knew were watching.

And then they fed it into a model and out came your premium.


The End of Actuarial Tables

Insurance pricing used to be simple. Actuaries studied large populations, calculated aggregate risk, and assigned premiums based on group statistics. You paid based on what people like you, on average, cost to insure.

AI is ending that era.

Modern insurance underwriting is shifting from population-level statistics to individual behavioral profiles. The goal, as insurance industry consultants describe it, is "segment of one" pricing — a premium calculated specifically for you, based on everything knowable about your behavior, environment, and predicted future.

McKinsey's insurance practice estimated in 2023 that AI-driven underwriting could reduce claims losses by 10-15% through better risk selection. Translation: better selection of who gets coverage and at what price.

This is not a future scenario. It is happening now, across every major insurance vertical.


Auto Insurance: Your Driving Score Is for Sale

Telematics — the practice of monitoring driving behavior through smartphone apps or plug-in OBD-II devices — has become the dominant data collection mechanism in auto insurance.

Progressive's Snapshot program. Allstate's Drivewise. State Farm's Drive Safe & Save. LiMuTech. Root Insurance (which prices entirely on driving behavior captured during a test period).

These programs collect:

  • Speed at all times
  • Hard braking events
  • Rapid acceleration
  • Phone usage while driving
  • Time of day and night driving
  • Location data (which roads, which neighborhoods)
  • Trip frequency and distance

Root Insurance went public in 2020 on the explicit thesis that traditional actuarial factors (age, gender, marital status) are inferior to behavioral telematics. Their model watches you drive for a few weeks and then decides whether to offer you coverage.

But the data doesn't stay siloed in insurance apps.

In 2023, The New York Times and Mozilla's Privacy Not Included project documented that General Motors's OnStar system had been selling detailed driving data — speed, hard braking, location history — to LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk Analytics. These data brokers then sold the driving profiles to insurance companies. GM customers had not been meaningfully informed that their connected car's data was being sold to insurers who would use it to raise their rates.

Some customers saw their premiums increase by hundreds of dollars per year. They had no idea why. They had no access to the data that caused the increase. They had no meaningful way to dispute it.

General Motors. OnStar. Your driving data sold to brokers. Brokers sold it to your insurer. Your rates went up. You didn't know any of this happened.


Health Insurance: The Wellness App Trap

The pitch is compelling: use our wellness app, earn points, get premium discounts. Exercise more, pay less. What could be wrong with that?

Everything.

Employer-sponsored health insurance programs — administered through vendors like Virgin Pulse, Vitality, Rally Health (now part of United Health Group), and Castlight Health — collect detailed health behavioral data:

  • Step counts and physical activity patterns
  • Sleep quality and duration
  • Nutrition tracking (foods logged, calories, macros)
  • Mental health surveys ("rate your stress this week")
  • Biometric screening results (blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, glucose)
  • Prescription drug records (through pharmacy benefit managers)
  • Claims data and diagnosis codes

This data is held by the wellness vendor, the pharmacy benefit manager, the third-party administrator, and in many cases the employer's HR analytics platform.

The HIPAA protections you think apply to your health data do not apply to wellness apps. HIPAA covers covered entities — healthcare providers, insurers, and their direct business associates. A stand-alone wellness app that you download voluntarily is not a covered entity. It can share your health behavioral data with partners, sell it to data brokers, or use it for purposes never disclosed to you.

In 2024, the FTC took action against GoodRx — a prescription drug discount service — for sharing patient prescription data with Facebook, Google, and Criteo for advertising purposes without user knowledge or meaningful consent. GoodRx settled for $1.5 million. The settlement required policy changes but no admission of wrongdoing.

Your prescription for antidepressants. Your diabetes medication. Your HIV treatment. These were shared with ad platforms.


Life Insurance: The Social Media Audit

In 2019, Munich Re (one of the world's largest reinsurance companies) partnered with ai startup AnalyticsIQ to pilot a program that would use social media profiles, consumer data, and behavioral signals to supplement — or in some cases replace — traditional life insurance medical underwriting.

The vision: instead of a blood draw and a physical exam, an algorithm analyzes your digital footprint and generates a risk score.

Factors under consideration in various industry research and pilot programs:

  • Social media activity and sentiment (how often do you post, what emotions do you express)
  • Purchase history (tobacco products, alcohol, fast food frequency)
  • Fitness tracker data
  • Credit card spending patterns at gyms, restaurants, pharmacies
  • Geographic movement patterns
  • Sleep app data
  • Even font choices and emoji usage patterns — which some researchers claim correlate with personality traits linked to longevity

New York's Department of Financial Services issued guidance in 2019 warning life insurers that using social media data in underwriting could run afoul of anti-discrimination laws if the practice results in disparate impact on protected classes. The guidance stopped short of prohibition.

Every other state was silent.


Home Insurance: The Smart Home Surveillance Network

Ring doorbells. Nest thermostats. SimpliSafe systems. Water leak sensors. Smart smoke detectors.

Home insurers are actively partnering with smart home device manufacturers to offer premium discounts in exchange for continuous data access.

State Farm, Hippo Insurance, and Lemonade have all piloted or launched programs that integrate with smart home devices. The pitch: install these sensors, share the data, get a discount.

Hippo Insurance — a prominent insurtech — built their entire model around smart home sensor data. They install sensors in homes they insure and monitor water usage, temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors continuously.

What this means in practice:

  • Your insurer knows when you're home and when you're away
  • Your insurer knows your temperature preferences (which correlates with energy usage and potentially income/lifestyle)
  • Your insurer knows if you leave for three weeks (burglary risk)
  • Your insurer knows if your pipes show signs of stress before they burst
  • Your insurer knows your daily routines

This data is held by the insurer. Their privacy policy governs what they can do with it. Their privacy policy can change.


Credit Scores Reimagined: The "Alternative Data" Expansion

Traditional credit scoring (FICO) relies on loan repayment history, credit utilization, account age, and hard inquiries. About 45 million Americans have no traditional credit history — they're "credit invisible."

Fintechs and alternative credit scoring companies have identified this population as an opportunity. The solution: score them on behavioral data instead.

Zest AI, Nova Credit, and Petal Card have built credit models that incorporate:

  • Rent payment history
  • Utility payment patterns
  • Bank account cash flow and transaction patterns
  • Employment stability signals from payroll data
  • Educational history
  • Even device type and operating system (iPhone vs. Android correlates with credit outcomes in some models)

This sounds benign — giving credit to people who deserve it. But the same infrastructure that extends credit using behavioral data can also deny insurance, restrict employment, or flag individuals using the same logic.

And crucially: none of this is regulated as credit data. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act cover traditional credit scores. They were not designed for models that price risk using 500 behavioral signals derived from smartphone data.


The Disparate Impact Problem

Every one of these systems — telematics, wellness scoring, social media underwriting, smart home monitoring — has the same structural flaw: algorithmic proxies for protected class membership.

You cannot legally price insurance based on race. You can price it based on neighborhood. Neighborhoods are highly correlated with race.

You cannot legally price insurance based on income. You can price it based on what phone someone uses, what stores they shop at, and how often they eat at fast-casual restaurants versus fast food. These signals correlate with income.

You cannot legally discriminate based on disability. You can use health behavioral data that correlates with disability status.

The algorithms don't know they're discriminating. They optimize for claims prediction. They find the patterns that predict claims. Those patterns are often proxies for race, income, disability, and other protected characteristics.

A 2022 ProPublica investigation into car insurance pricing found that in many states, drivers in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods paid significantly higher premiums than drivers in white neighborhoods with similar accident rates. The insurers were using factors — credit scores, home ownership, professional occupation — that produce racially disparate outcomes without explicitly using race.

When the model has 500 input variables, proving discriminatory intent is nearly impossible. Proving discriminatory effect requires data that insurers are not required to provide.


The Invisibility of It All

The deepest problem with AI-driven insurance scoring is not the data collection. It's the opacity.

When your premium is set by a human underwriter reading your application, there's a comprehensible chain of causation. When your premium is set by a gradient-boosted model trained on 2,000 behavioral features aggregated from 15 data sources, there is no chain you can trace.

You receive a number. The number might be wrong. The data feeding the model might be wrong — data broker records are notoriously error-prone, with studies finding significant error rates in consumer profiles. But you have no meaningful right to inspect the model, challenge the inputs, or understand why your number is what it is.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you rights to dispute inaccurate credit information. No equivalent law exists for behavioral risk scores used in insurance underwriting. The insurance industry has largely regulated itself on this question, with entirely predictable results.


What You Can Do

Know what's being collected:

  • If you use a telematics app, read what data is collected and who it's shared with
  • Review your employer wellness app's privacy policy — look for "third-party partners" and "service providers"
  • Check whether your connected car manufacturer has a data sharing opt-out

Exercise your data rights:

  • Under the CCPA (California) and similar state laws, you can request what data a company holds about you and ask for deletion
  • You can request your CLUE report (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) — the insurance industry's version of a credit report — for free once per year at LexisNexis
  • You can request your consumer report from LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Verisk/ISO, and TransUnion directly

Limit the data pipeline:

  • Opt out of connected car data sharing (GM's privacy settings, Ford's, Tesla's)
  • Use privacy-preserving browsers and search engines to limit behavioral profile building

The Larger Picture

Insurance is a microcosm of what AI behavioral profiling is doing to every life domain.

The same data infrastructure that sets your car insurance premium also sets your mortgage rate, determines whether you get a job interview, decides your credit limit, and increasingly filters what content the algorithm shows you.

The model doesn't know you. It knows your behavioral fingerprint. And it has decided, based on millions of people who fingerprint like you, what your future is worth.

The "actuarial fairness" argument — that it's just math, just statistics, just risk prediction — obscures a choice. We chose to let these models operate. We chose not to regulate them. We chose to let data brokers aggregate behavioral profiles without consent or audit rights.

That choice has consequences. They're not equally distributed.
