Defenses require multiple layers:

Security Awareness Training that helps employees recognize manipulation techniques and builds skepticism toward unsolicited requests.

Verification Procedures that require independent confirmation before taking sensitive actions, especially financial transactions.

Technical Controls that flag suspicious messages, limit credential usage, and monitor for unusual account activity.

Authentication Requirements that go beyond simple passwords, using multi-factor authentication especially for sensitive accounts.

Monitoring for Behavioral Changes that detect when accounts are being used anomalously.

The Regulatory Response

Governments are beginning to respond to AI-enabled social engineering through regulation. The FTC has brought enforcement actions against voice cloning services used for fraud. Some jurisdictions have criminalized unauthorized deepfake creation. But regulation lags significantly behind technology capability.
