I had a similar experience with having my own website/deconstructing other people's websites around that age, playing tons of video games all my life, and also being really into photography for a period of time. None of this was a secret, but nobody ever suggested software engineering (or anything technical really) as a career direction. I'm glad we both got there eventually!
