Professional web developer and hobbyist programmer from the Welsh Marches. I'm particularly interested in performance, accessibility, and reducing carbon emissions from software.
This is a really good post. Thank you so much for putting it together.
Sustainability is something we all need to start thinking about; especially as it is so intrinsicly linked to site performance and the scale of the web; if you build a website right it can be sustainable, performant, accessible and a joy to use.
I'm trying to raise awareness about this topic with a project called the Better Web Alliance - which I'm hoping will be able to provide links to good resources on making websites better for everyone.
I'm a web developer, graphic designer, type designer, musician, comicbook-geek, LEGO-collector, food lover … as well as husband and father, located just south of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Thank you! And thanks for the great links, I'm going to take a look at Gerrys book. I want to create a "this page use x amunt of co2"-JavaScript-snippet. Tom Greenwood shares the "recipe" on his site (from kb to electricity to co2), although I think the actual internet-electricity usage is way bigger, if you include routers, modems etc. Hopefully I can find some collaborators among the "sustainable crowd ;-)

Website Carbon Calculator do have a badge you can embed on your site, but it seems to just ping their API. JavaScript is not my strong point, but I'd definitely be interested in collaborating on any tools that make it easier to improve sustainability on the web.

I've not read Sustainable Web Design yet, but it's on my list. Another great book is World Wide Waste by Gerry McGovern. Tom Greenwood is also one of the people behind the Sustainable Web Manifesto which is worth a look.
