I think the biggest reason I tend to go to vim, or as I put it the modal editing aspect, is something that has stuck with me since reading 'The Pragmatic Programmer', pick a flexible text editor and stick with it. After seeing editors come and go, I find it difficult to commit time to something that I cannot be sure of 10 years from now. Vim style editing will be around for a long time, add in the fact that I can use vim-modes in whatever IDE /system/computer/terminal/... You get the idea. It's flexible, it's available, and I can expect it to be around for a long time.
