Contributing to Open Source overall is good because, after trimming all the BS, in the end:

  1. Makes society more productive
  2. Keeps skills up to date and you competitive

On the other side, the price you pay to keep the job or being employed is:

  1. Work extra hours on open source projects with no pay, taking that time from family & friends. It's not easy when already working 10-12 hours per day.
  2. Corps gets cheaper and higher educated labor. Now to get a good job is almost required to have contributed for free is such projects, which indeed somehow directly or indirectly serve corporations
