My company has both a CIO and a CTO, both manage teams of people, both still write code. Big caveat, my company is pretty small with not a ton of engineers. I imagine the more engineers, the more work there is to do with planning / organizing.
I guess what I’m saying is it’s definitely possible, but you’ll probably want to look at smaller companies / startups.
