Join the GitHub Finish-Up-A-Thon Challenge: $3,000 Prize Pool!

Revive old projects using GitHub Copilot

We're thrilled to announce our newest challenge with GitHub!

Running through June 7, the GitHub Finish-Up-A-Thon Challenge invites you to finally give that abandoned side project, challenge submission, or hackathon creation the love it deserves. GitHub is looking for ways to empower builders to finish what they started, and this challenge is the first step.

There's a $3,000 prize pool on the line for those of you who are up to the challenge. Ten winners will be selected and will also receive a DEV++ membership along with an exclusive winner badge.

Read on to learn more.

Our Prompt

Your mandate is to revive and finish a project you started but never completed.

You built something cool under pressure, likely with too little sleep and not enough time. Now it's your chance to pick it back up, add some polish, and share it with the world.

The most important aspect? Show us your before and after, and how GitHub Copilot helped you get there.

Judging Criteria

All qualified entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Use of underlying technology
  • Usability and User Experience
  • Originality and Creativity
  • Completion Arc: Is there a clear before and after journey?

Prizes

Ten Winners will each receive:

  • $300 USD
  • DEV++ Membership
  • Exclusive DEV Badge

All Participants with a valid submission will receive a completion badge on their DEV profile.

How To Participate

In order to participate, share your revived project and publish a post using the submission template below.

Wait a minute. This is perfect. :o

I was picking up on a project I haven't touch for a year now and seeing this post is crazy timing. Can't wait to share to DEV! :D

Question. When you are teaming up to 4 people, that includes yourself in that group?

I already know the hardest part will be deciding which unfinished project deserves a comeback 🥲🥲

Good to see this! I just thought of a project I've been contemplating whether to refine it further or not. This is the time to complete it.

TLDR: bruh...

General groaning

I have been summoned.

I know exactly which project.

And that is going to be a lot of work. 😂 You mean the really awesome rails app I built from actual scratch and put to the wayside because I don't want to rebuild it in React because that's what everyone is doing now? You know what really prevents me from finishing things?

  • The idea of having to market it to people.
  • The idea of actually being successful and having to manage that.
  • I also realize how unlikely this is, but the fear is real lol.

When I think about making an app and trying to get people on bored, I think of those annoying commercials where the guy is always like "there's an app for that!" or like the multiple instances where people make fun of people that have ideas for apps. Is this the thorn in the side of every developer?

Then there's the whole "how many users do you have" thing. Ugh. Having to ever answer that question would make me question my existence. I just want to build sparklies all day, unquestioned. 😂

Gemini gives me a reality check further convincing me:

words of wisdom

Oh cool. So I build houses now. I should finish putting the walls up then.

But the even bigger problem is that I have poked around with it so much I don't know where the best place to start is. By the time I finish this comment, I probably could have found the root of a bug. Ahhhhhh... distractions!

My brain has been folded more times than me trying to think that Dynamic Programming is some kind of Gaslighting while loop lol

What did I just read? 👀

Awesome! This challenge is perfect and really speaks to me… I have tons of “pending” projects; I’m sure I’ll find one that GitHub Copilot will help me finalize 😁
