I love the nuance here and agree with everything you've said with one exception: There being tonnes of unused resources.

Your code might be lightweight on its own, but most people have multiple tabs. I have enough tabs that I'm not going to count them because it'll give me The Anxiety. Also, 3rd party JS code from ad servers and management tools and whatever-else can be extremely weighty. If I visit any single one of the Gawker sites with an ad-blocker off, for example, my fans spin up like my Mac wishes it was a hoverboat.

This is especially the case if you load un-versioned 3rd party resources directly from the source; Who knows what performance snafus their team might have in any given version?

I can't agree more that it's not worth obsessing over... But the more performance leeway you leave yourself, the less impact external forces have on your product.
