Maybe this is not an entirely relevant quote, but my mentor said: 'knowledge how to and especially where to search for something, is knowledge too.' Of course this doesn't cover all bases, but his intention was to point out that I already knew the language but not the framework they were using that well. I really like that quote because it's true, however one should always show the will to learn more. That is how I got my first job in IT anyway.
So, generalisation indeed is the way to go, but specialise at least in something, just to show your own value.
