I have been building my portfolio as a static website since 2014. There have been 5 rewrites/redesigns of the portfolio in last 7 years. The only time I had switched to a server rendered react app with a nodejs backend was in November 2017. That was done as a proof of concept for a project I was working on at my job. I switched back to static site again in one year.
