Pinephone is probably the way to go, while making Android emulation a smoother experience, e.g. by improving Anbox or Waydroid. This is the only issue that currently holds me back from buying a used Pinephone (I want to use Signal).
I think we have to go the path of a "soft" migrations:
migrating to privacy and freedom respecting hardware while having the software most people use (e.g. WhatsApp)
migrating to privacy and freedom respecting software
A lot of people do not care what hardware they run, but what software they can use with it.
