Like you, I've been dealing with complex solutions for a long time and still get frustrated by issues like the one you described. I understand and believe the importance of a good algorithm, but measuring a person for a 30 minutes [supervised] test may not the best way. It's even more strange when you are not allowed to rethink your solution using time and research, when some tests come from a google search. Even worse when the applicant is analysed by Devs most of the time less experienced or not concerned about the overall objectives of the role (once I was interviewed for a Team Lead position with ability to read Python and the Dev kept asking algo questions about Javascript). I see HR professionals getting better over time, but relying on wrong methods or IT analysis.
