I totally agree with all the points you make here. We also use "take home" technical challenges for our candidates. It works great. I would like to step them up like Basecamp does, where they actually pay candidates for a week or two of real work to evaluate them.

Is very important to attract the right people, and for that you need to be very involved in the process.

Yeah - I've actually heard of some companies giving access to their codebase, and building out an actual feature for the product and paying the engineer for their time. Pretty bold move, but how cool is that!

How much do you think is fair compensation for take-home projects?

Contracting rate for the seniority level of the candidate
