So here is my two cents. As a Linux enthusiast since my teens in the 1990's, I regularly download and try different distributions just to see what's up. So, on regularly used distributions, I started with Red Hat, then went to Fedora when Red Hat was no longer free. I still occasionally use CentOS for server programs, but I switched to Ubuntu a number of years back, first because of it's support for SPARC, but then because of it's prevalence in the market. I quickly found that while Ubuntu worked pretty well, the desktop had some glitches I didn't care to deal with, primarily when gaming. I switched to Linux Mint, which had a much better interface for my needs, but caused me some issues because it is based on the Ubuntu LTS release, and often had dependency issues with newer programs. I tried Pop! OS for awhile because of it's gaming ability, and while that part was great, almost everything else I tried to do with it was a pain. After all this, I decided to go to the root of everything, and switched to Debian, with the MATE desktop, which I highly recommend, as it is simple, light, and easy to switch between Windows. The conclusion I come to is that the Linux distribution you choose should be about what YOU like - while I hated Pop! OS, many people like it. I like the simplicity of stock Debian with MATE, but that may not be what you like. Something I do on a regular basis, and that I highly recommend, is that you get VirtualBox or some other virtual machine manager, and download distributions you think you might like, and give them a test drive. I have very quickly eliminated many distributions, while determining others that required more testing to decide if they were truly what I wanted.
