The economics of social media means they chase eyeballs and to get those eyeballs, you need to have content that is provocative. If you incentivize people chasing numbers, it moves digital platforms in the direction of a digital informercialand. Until social media and tech can change the incentives and break away from engagement metrics, there will always be groups like this. The only option as an individual is to filter them out, or ditch the platform.
