I agree that vim has a learning curve and to learn enough of vim to be productive takes a long time, but hear me out. First off, any IDE is bloated and there are a lot of things going on undercover that a developer may or may not be aware of. So if you develop in vim, all the time that takes to setup your project and environment may actually help you code better. Secondly, vim is ubiquitous and preinstalled in almost everything. So knowing how to use vim is a great asset and practicing vim with your day to day development with make you better at vim.
Last thought, I'm a passionate guy and I suggest vim over almost everything although I have been using vim for just over 3 months and I don't have as much knowledge about vim as I would wish to.
