The arrival of generative AI assistants like Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 represents one of the most significant shifts in enterprise productivity in a generation. Pillar 1: Data Governance & Access Control
This is the most critical prerequisite. Before a single user is granted a Copilot license, a thorough audit of your data access controls is mandatory.

Enforce the Principle of Least Privilege: Ensure that employees have access to only the data they absolutely need to perform their jobs. Overly broad access is the single greatest risk.

Confirm Data Residency: Ensure your Microsoft 365 tenant and Copilot processing are configured to adhere to data residency requirements like GDPR.

Manage Cross-Border Data Access: Implement Microsoft 365's granular policy controls to prevent Copilot from summarizing data in a way that would violate cross-border data transfer regulations.

Validate with Legal and Compliance: Your legal and compliance teams must be involved from the outset to review and approve the data handling and privacy implications of your Copilot deployment strategy.

Pillar 4: User Training & Acceptable Use Policies

The final pillar is the human element. Employees must be trained on how to use this powerful tool responsibly.

Develop a Clear AUP: Create and enforce an Acceptable Use Policy that explicitly defines what is and is not an appropriate use of Copilot, with specific guidance on handling sensitive and confidential information.
