ECMA stopped using ordinal version numbers at ECMAScript 5. Using the year in the name has been the standard since ES2015 (aka ES6). Though, I am in favor of shortening ECMAScript to ES.
I think there is a value in using the accurate name. Were everyone to do so, there would be no opportunity for confusion. The official standard name seems like the best to default to.
