I have a similar Asus tablet with an Atom processor and 2 GB of memory. It also chugs when running a modern desktop environment. Unfortunately it doesn't have a keyboard so GNOME is basically the only option.
Pretty much everything works out of the box with Fedora.

I tried Fedora specifically to see if the touchscreen would work on this one too. It didn’t. I started trying to track down drivers for it but gave up. I’m really happy with Lubuntu and i3 though.
