NEW YORK, NY — echo3D, the leading 3D digital asset management platform, is proud to announce full platform support for the .SPZ file format. This update empowers teams to manage, convert, and view 3D Gaussian Splats with unprecedented efficiency, leveraging the open-source compression technology developed by Niantic Spatial.
As the demand for photorealistic 3D capture grows, 3D Gaussian Splatting has emerged as a premier technique for rendering complex scenes. However, the standard file format for these splats, .PLY, often results in massive file sizes that are difficult to share and stream.
With this new integration, echo3D addresses this bottleneck by adopting the SPZ format, a compressed file type optimized for 3D Gaussian splats.

Key Benefits of SPZ on echo3D:
Massive Compression: SPZ files are typically 10x smaller than their .PLY equivalents, significantly reducing bandwidth usage and storage costs.
High Fidelity: Despite the dramatic reduction in file size, SPZ maintains virtually no perceptible loss in visual quality compared to the original uncompressed files.
Automated Conversion: echo3D users can now upload standard .PLY files, which the platform will automatically convert into the optimized .SPZ format.
Web-Based Viewing: Users can view SPZ files directly within the echo3D browser-based console, streamlining the review process for 3D assets.
“By integrating Niantic’s SPZ format, we are removing the friction associated with heavy 3D Gaussian Splat files,” said Ben Pedazur, CTO at echo3D. “Our users can now enjoy the visual fidelity of splats with the transmission speed of optimized web assets.”
The SPZ format is offered as open source by Niantic Spatial and is closely integrated with their Scaniverse technology. By supporting this format, echo3D continues its mission to provide the most robust 3D spatial data solution for the 3D and spatial computing ecosystem.
