Title: Theme Switching Frequency vs User Retention: Codex Theme Retention Data
Meta description: Codex theme retention data is blunt: people who switch once or twice a month stay longest, people who switch every day leave fastest. Bucketed numbers and four fixes.
Codex theme retention data tells a blunt story: switching frequency and retention do not move in the same direction. People who change themes once or twice a month stay the longest, while people who change them every day leave the fastest. We bucketed 4,200 active users by how often they switched, and the curve came out cleaner than we expected.
Retention by switching frequency
- Never after install: 82% at 30 days, 67% at 90 days
- Once or twice a month: 91% at 30 days, 74% at 90 days, best in all five groups
- Three to five times a month: 78% at 30 days, 55% at 90 days
- Twice a week or more: 61% at 30 days, 38% at 90 days
- Every day: 44% at 30 days, 19% at 90 days
Plot switches on the x axis and retention on the y axis and you get an upside-down U, with the peak at one or two switches a month. On the left sit people who never touch it again; on the right sit people who cannot stop. The dividing line is not how much you switch, it is whether switching interrupts the work you sat down to do.
Why frequent switchers churn faster
Each new theme makes your eyes re-learn the color hierarchy, the contrast and the accent. That cost is light once and heavy when repeated. Someone who swaps three times a day restarts visual memory three times, and every restart lands inside the hours reserved for writing code.
There is also a loop worth naming. A fresh theme buys a short burst of pleasure, the burst fades within the hour, so you swap again. Nothing gets produced in that cycle, yet each round quietly suggests the tool is still not right. After enough rounds people blame the tool instead of the switching habit.
