This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend
What I Built
I built StudyMate, an AI-powered study assistant designed to make studying from PDFs faster and easier.
The idea came from a simple problem students face: when they have a large PDF or study material, it takes a lot of time to read everything, identify important topics, create notes, and prepare questions for revision.
StudyMate lets students upload a PDF and automatically generates:
- 📄 AI-powered PDF summaries
- 🎯 Important topics
- 📝 Structured study notes
- ❓ MCQs with answers
- 🧠 Interactive quizzes
- 📊 Study analytics
- 📈 Quiz history
- 📚 Saved studies for later revision
- 👤 User authentication and personal study data
I built StudyMate to help students turn large and difficult study materials into structured, easy-to-understand revision content.

StudyMate - AI-Powered Study Assistant
StudyMate is a full-stack web application that helps students analyze study materials (PDFs) using Groq's cloud AI API. It transforms textbooks and lecture notes into structured summaries, smart notes, and interactive quizzes.
🚀 Features
- PDF Upload & Analysis: Upload any academic PDF and get an instant overview of the subject and main concepts.
- Important Topics: AI identifies high-priority topics with explanations and related concepts.
- Smart Notes: Converts dense PDF text into structured study notes with headings, bullet points, and definitions.
- MCQ Generator: Generates a configurable number of MCQs based on the document.
- Interactive Quiz: A full quiz experience with score tracking and detailed explanations for every answer.
- Quiz History & Analytics: Saves each completed attempt and shows the user's study totals and score trend.
- AI Processing: PDF text is sent to Groq's API for analysis. Do not upload…
The project is organized as a full-stack application with a React frontend and Node.js/Express backend.
How I Built It
StudyMate is built using:
- React.js + Vite — frontend
- Node.js + Express.js — backend
- MongoDB Atlas — database
- Groq API + GPT-OSS-20B — AI-powered PDF analysis
- Mongoose — MongoDB integration
- JWT — authentication
- bcrypt.js — password hashing
- Vercel — frontend deployment
- Render — backend deployment
The application extracts text from uploaded PDFs and sends the extracted content to the AI layer. The AI analyzes the content and generates structured study material such as summaries, important topics, notes, MCQs, and quizzes.
Study data and quiz attempts are stored in MongoDB so users can return to their study material and track their progress over time.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes it possible to combine open-source technologies, open-weight AI models, and developer tools to build useful applications without having to create every component from scratch.
For StudyMate, open technologies made it possible to experiment quickly with the frontend, backend, database, AI integration, authentication, and deployment.
Using an open-weight AI model also makes the AI layer more accessible for developers who want to understand, experiment with, and build on modern AI technology.
Open innovation is especially valuable for students because it lowers the barrier to building real-world applications and allows us to learn by actually creating.
My Agent Session
I used an AI coding agent during the development of StudyMate to help build, debug, improve, and deploy the application.
Prize Categories
🤖 Best Use of Gemma: Gemma 3 4B was used locally through Ollama during the development of StudyMate to experiment with PDF analysis and AI-generated study material. For the public demo, the AI workflow was adapted to use GPT-OSS-20B through the Groq API for reliable production inference.
🍃 Best Use of MongoDB: MongoDB Atlas powers StudyMate's persistent data layer, storing user accounts, saved studies, generated study material, quiz attempts, study analytics, and quiz history. This allows students to save their progress and return to their learning material anytime.
Built For
StudyMate was built with students in mind, especially students who regularly study from large PDFs and want a faster way to understand, revise, and test themselves.
The goal was to build something practical that a student could actually use during their studies instead of simply creating another demo project.
Thanks for checking out StudyMate! 🚀
