I Asked AI to Write a Horror Story. I Regret Everything. πŸ‘οΈ

This is a submission for the "Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine" (https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week4-2026-10-26)

πŸ‘» Haunted Tales β€” Where AI Gives Your Nightmares a Story

What I Built

Haunted Tales is an AI-powered horror story generator that turns ideas, fears, and imagination into eerie storytelling experiences.

I built this project around the theme β€œGhost in the Machine” by exploring how artificial intelligence can create something unsettling, imaginative, and almost human. What happens when a machine tells a story that feels like it came from a nightmare?

With Haunted Tales, users can explore the darker side of imagination through horror storytelling. The goal was to create more than a simple text generator: I wanted to build an immersive experience that makes users feel as though they have stepped into a mysterious world where every story hides something unexpected.

The idea was inspired by my interest in horror stories and the creative possibilities of AI. Instead of treating AI as just a chatbot, I wanted to use it as a storytelling partner.

How I Built It

I built Haunted Tales using Bold, an AI-powered development tool that helped me turn my idea into a working web application.

The project combines a web-based user experience with AI-powered horror storytelling. My focus was on making the experience accessible and interactive while exploring how AI can be used creatively rather than only for productivity tasks.

For this challenge, the important part is not simply that the application uses AI. It is how AI contributes to the central experience: generating stories that create suspense, mystery, and unexpected twists.

Open-source AI used: [Add the exact open-weight model, open-source framework, or inference tool used by your application.]

I want to be transparent about the technology behind the project: using an AI development tool to build an application does not automatically mean the application itself runs on an open-source AI model. The model or framework powering the actual story generation needs to be identified.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes AI experimentation more accessible to developers, students, and independent creators.

For a project like Haunted Tales, open-source AI can offer opportunities to experiment with different models, customize storytelling behavior, and explore how generated content can be produced without depending entirely on a closed AI service.

It also encourages developers to understand the technology behind their applications instead of treating AI as a black box.

As a student developer, I find this especially exciting. Open innovation gives us the opportunity to move beyond ideas and experiment with creative applications of AI, learn by building, and share what we create with the community.

My goal is to keep exploring how open AI technologies can make interactive storytelling more creative, accessible, and personal.

The Spirit of It

The most interesting part of horror is often what you don't see.

A strange sound in an empty room. A message that should not exist. A story that feels a little too familiar.

With Haunted Tales, I wanted to explore that feeling through AI. The machine does not need to be a ghost itself; it only needs to tell a story that makes you wonder what might be hiding behind the screen.

Sometimes, the scariest thing isn't the story. It's the thought that a machine imagined it. πŸ‘οΈ
