Compound Interest Feels Slow — Until Suddenly It Doesn't

Everyone talks about compound interest like it's magic. The truth is stranger: it feels completely useless for years, and then suddenly it dominates.

The shape of compounding

If you invest a few hundred dollars a month, year one looks embarrassing. The gains barely beat the fees. For the first decade, your own contributions are doing almost all the work. Then, somewhere in year 15-20, the growth starts contributing more than you do. That's the bend.

Most people quit right before the bend.

What actually moves the needle

  • Time beats amount. Starting at 20 with less money usually beats starting at 35 with more.
  • Keep costs near zero. A fund with 0.04% fees vs 1% quietly costs you hundreds of thousands over a career.
  • Don't interrupt it. Selling during a crash resets the whole curve.
  • Increase your savings rate when your income grows. Lifestyle inflation is the silent killer.

The uncomfortable part

There is no clever shortcut. The advantage belongs to whoever can be consistent the longest — not whoever found the best stock.
