I want to deepen some new professional skills. Not 100% sure what those are, but I have a few things in mind I want to get better at.

I also really want to make better use of my time away from work — less mindless phone time.

I can definitely relate to the mindless phone time. I've had a few stretches of a few months where I didn't use social media, but I seem to always find it creeping back into my life. Lately I've been getting into the habit of starting each day by writing down some things I want to do. When there's a physical list I can look at, endlessly scrolling Twitter is less likely to be my default state

You are totally right about the relation between a list of things to do and procrastination. I'v noticed that I'm scrolling twitter or watching youtube if I eihther don't know what to do next or how to do that next thing

For that second goal, if you have an iPhone, Settings > Screen Time will let you set daily time limits for specific apps and sites. I was having the same problem where I would spend hours each day mindlessly scrolling Reddit/Imgur and come away feeling anxious/frustrated/unfulfilled.

I tried cold turkey at first, but after a few months the dam broke and I was back where I started.

I currently have it set to 15 mins/day for Reddit/Imgur and that seems to be the sweet spot for me.

Hope that helps!
