AI, VR, AR — we're definitely at an inflection point in tech which is likely to hit gaming at the forefront of each wave.
If some of these technologies have been slow to happen, several appear to be "happening" now.

The progression in graphics and new technologies in video games is wonderful but I'd like to see them dial the gameplay down some. Just because we can doesn't always mean we should and I get really excited when older games get remastered for that reason..
Most games nowadays have so much to do, learn, and remember that I get lost or over stimulated when I just want to chill and relax. This is why I'm constantly going back to way older games like SNES and N64 style games. Donkey Country, Super Mario 64, Driver, Gran Turismo, etc.. That's where it's at for me, don't over complicate it!
They'll become even less like actual entertaining games than they are now, and even more like joyless interactive movies.

But we also got used to certain things like big well crafted environment and characters (visual, animation etc) which takes a lot of time and resources and at the end there is not much time or resources left for implementing the actual game :D
Also, most of this is pure nostalgia, the games that we had played to escape would not capture us the same way as they once did anyway.
Definitely at an inflection point?
VR and AR are still solutions looking for problems when it comes to video games. Pokemon Go was the height of AR. VR has nothing to offer that isn't a gimmick people will tire of in a week.
Generative art based on OpenAI-like technology will lead us into ever more boring asset flips in the Steam store, and Google play will just be flooded with sub par adver-games even more than now.
The AAA games industry will try to make use of generative art, but will find that they need to hire human artists and writers to make their games actually enjoyable.
I guess the live services model will be given a short stay of execution as it's propped up by generative art.
Sorry for being so sceptical, I just can't see anything good coming from genAI in terms of creativity.
I love generative art, in terms of coming up with interesting algorithms for creating things. I hate that companies have taken human achievements, claimed them as their own, and created ever faster simulacrum generators. They're basically the t-shirt sites that steal artists' work, but with VC funding.
I expect AI to be used even more so the NPCs and computer characters should be even more intelligent and human-like. And AI will most likely be used to generate content inside the games. Like map creation, artwork and even for stories and lore.
I think that the graphics will definitely be much better.
