This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.
What I Built
I built SmartSeller AI, an open-source product description generator designed to help small businesses, students, and online sellers.
Writing attractive product descriptions takes time. SmartSeller AI aims to make this easier by generating descriptions from three simple inputs:
- Product name
- Product price
- Special features
The project uses Python and is designed to work with a locally running Qwen2.5 AI model through Ollama.
My goal is to make AI tools accessible to people who cannot afford expensive subscriptions.
Demo
SmartSeller AI runs through a simple command-line interface.
Example inputs:
Product: Handmade Lavender Candle
Price: Rs. 199
Special feature: Handmade with natural lavender fragrance
The application sends these details to the AI model to request a short product description.
Real AI-Generated Output
Below is a screenshot of SmartSeller AI generating a product description using the Qwen2.5 model running locally through Ollama. This is a demonstration; AI-generated product claims should be verified before use.

Code
GitHub Repository:
https://github.com/thebugbag/SmartSeller-AI
The repository includes the Python source code, installation instructions, and MIT license.
How I Built It
I used:
- Python 3 for the application
- Ollama for local AI inference
- Qwen2.5 (0.5B) as the open-weight language model
- Python Requests library to communicate with Ollama
The application collects product details from the user and constructs a prompt.
It then sends the prompt to Ollama's local API at localhost:11434.
The model's response is displayed as a product description.
This approach avoids the need for a paid cloud AI API.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation allows beginners and independent developers to build useful technology without needing expensive resources.
For SmartSeller AI, open-weight models and open-source software made it possible to design an AI-powered application that can run locally.
Users can inspect the source code, learn how it works, modify it, and contribute improvements.
I believe open-source AI can make entrepreneurship and technology more accessible to students and small businesses.
Future Improvements
I would like to add:
- A user-friendly web interface
- Multiple language support
- Different writing styles
- More accurate product descriptions
- Product category selection
Conclusion
SmartSeller AI is my attempt to explore how open-source AI can help small businesses and online sellers.
Building this project helped me learn about Python, local AI models, APIs, GitHub, and open-source development.
Thank you for checking out my project!
