I Tested 4 AI Alt Text Plugins on the Same Images. Here's What Happened.
Alt text is one of those tasks everyone agrees is important and almost nobody keeps up with.
It helps screen readers describe images to visually impaired users, improves image SEO, and increasingly provides context for AI systems and search engines.
The problem is scale.
Writing alt text for 20 images is manageable. Writing it for 2,000 images in a WordPress Media Library is not.
That's where AI alt text generators come in.
To see how they compare, I tested four WordPress plugins using the exact same three images and default settings:
Rather than looking only at AI quality, I also compared features, workflows, and pricing.
The Test Images
I used three different image types:
- A butterfly on flowers
- A person working on a laptop in a café
- A product-style sneaker image
Each plugin received the exact same image and default settings.
Image #1: Butterfly on Flowers
ShortPixel
Black and yellow butterfly perched on pink flower with green background.
AltText.ai
A black butterfly with white and yellow markings and a yellow abdomen rests on a cluster of bright pink flowers, surrounded by green leaves with a blurred blue-green background.
Alt Magic
Black butterfly with white spots and yellow abdomen on red Ixora flowers.
AltTextLab
A black butterfly with yellow and red markings perched on vibrant pink flowers. The butterfly displays large wings with intricate patterns, while the flowers are clustered together, surrounded by green leaves.
My Take
AltText.ai and AltTextLab produced the most detailed descriptions.
Alt Magic was the only tool that attempted to identify the flower species.
ShortPixel generated the shortest result while still describing the image accurately, but the plugin also allows you to choose how long the results should be.
Image #2: Laptop & Coffee
ShortPixel
Person working on a laptop with coffee and dessert in a cozy cafe setting.
AltText.ai
A person with long dark hair uses a laptop at a small round table with a peach dessert, a fork, and a cup of coffee, against a pink cushioned wall.
Alt Magic
Woman working on a MacBook with a latte and dessert in a cafe.
AltTextLab
A person wearing a cream sweater types on a laptop on a marble table. Next to the laptop, there is a white cup of cappuccino and a pink dessert on a plate, with a pink upholstered wall in the background.
My Take
This image highlighted different approaches.
AltText.ai and AltTextLab focused on visible details.
Alt Magic went further by naming the device as a MacBook and the person as a woman, details inferred rather than strictly visible.
ShortPixel described the overall scene rather than individual visual details.
Neither approach is necessarily wrong. It depends on whether you prefer richer descriptions or shorter, more conservative ones.
Image #3: Sneakers
ShortPixel
White sneakers with pink and black accents on a modern chair.
AltText.ai
A pair of white sneakers with black and pink accents rest on a light gray chair with wooden legs, against a plain white background.
Alt Magic
White Puma Future Rider sneakers with pink and black accents on a grey chair.
AltTextLab
A pair of white sneakers with black and pink accents is placed on a gray chair. The sneakers feature a textured sole with a hint of yellow.
My Take
Alt Magic stood out by identifying a specific product model.
AltText.ai and AltTextLab generated detailed but brand-neutral descriptions.
ShortPixel remained concise and focused on the main subject.
Pricing at a Glance
Here's how the plugins compare on what it costs to get started, the free tier, and the entry price per image.

| ShortPixel | 100 free AI credits/month | Unlimited AI plan from ~$13.33/month (annual) | Effectively unlimited on that plan |
Note: "credit" usually maps to one image, but check each provider's terms, since some count certain formats or extra metadata fields differently.

Final Verdict
All four plugins generated usable alt text. The right choice comes down to your workflow more than to AI quality.
ShortPixel took a more conservative route, generating shorter descriptions by default while letting you set the character length when you want them longer. It was also the only plugin here that bundles a wider image SEO workflow, covering alt text, captions, titles, descriptions, and filenames in one place rather than alt text alone, handy if you already run ShortPixel for image optimization.
AltText.ai is the most focused option, a dedicated alt text tool with custom prompts and WP-CLI support. It consistently produced some of the longest, most detailed descriptions by default, which suits content-heavy blogs and sites that want fine control over output.
Alt Magic was the most aggressive at product recognition, identifying specific brands and models, and its non-expiring credit packs work out to the lowest cost per image in this test. That makes it the natural fit for high-volume WooCommerce catalogs.
AltTextLab matched AltText.ai on detail and adds post-title and SEO-keyword awareness, making it a solid pick for sites that want context-aware descriptions. Its free plan makes it easy to test first.
But whichever plugin you choose, the biggest improvement isn't picking the "perfect" AI model.
It's replacing empty alt attributes with useful descriptions in the first place.
