How to mass remove background from your pictures

If you’re working with product images, portraits, or assets for your website or app, chances are you’ve needed to remove a background or two.

I ran into this recently while prepping some visuals, and I didn’t want to spend hours in Photoshop or pay for a tool just to remove backgrounds.

I came across ShortPixel’s online background remover and was surprised at how quick and clean it is, especially since you can process multiple images at once, for free, right in the browser.

Here’s a quick walkthrough:

Step 1: Go to ShortPixel’s Online Optimizer

👉 ShortPixel Online Optimizer

Even though the page says “image compression,” it also comes with a built-in photo background remover that works extremely well.

Step 2: Adjust the Settings

Before uploading your images, make sure to:

  • Enable Remove Background
  • (Optional) Set the Compression Level to “Lossy” if you want the smallest file size possible

Step 3: Upload Your Images

You can either drag & drop or click to upload multiple images at once.

This online background remover free works best with:

  • Product photos (phones, gadgets, clothes, etc.)
  • Portraits with clear contrast between the subject and the background
  • Any image where the subject is easy to detect (single object or person)

Try to avoid:

  • Busy or messy backgrounds
  • Group shots with overlapping people/objects

You’ll then see each image get processed and have a side-by-side preview when clicking it: before vs. after.

Step 4: Create an Account to Download All Files at Once

You can download each image individually, but if you want to grab all processed files in one go (as a ZIP archive), you’ll need to:

  1. Click Create account (top right)
  2. Enter your email
  3. Confirm your email
  4. Once logged in, hit Download All to get a ZIP file with all your images

Why This Is Useful

If you’re a developer, indie hacker, or designer working on:

  • Product pages
  • Marketing assets
  • Social media visuals
  • User-uploaded avatars

…this tool can save you time and effort. No need for Photoshop, no need to write code, just upload, click, and download.

TL;DR

  • Go to ShortPixel Background Remover
  • Enable Remove Background
  • Upload multiple images
  • (Optional) Create an account to download everything as a ZIP
