How to Fund a Smart Account After a Paymaster Shortfall

Moving assets to cover an account abstraction paymaster shortfall means getting the right payment asset onto the chain where your smart account needs it. The key is to check who is short: if the sponsor’s paymaster is out of funds, you may need the app to restore sponsorship; if your account lacks an accepted payment asset, a cross-chain move may help.

  • A paymaster is a service that agrees to cover a smart account’s transaction gas.
  • Bridging funds helps only if the app can use those funds for payment.
  • Check the destination chain and payment method before moving anything.

What does the shortfall mean?

A shortfall can mean the paymaster cannot sponsor your transaction, or that your account does not meet the app’s payment rules. A smart account is a wallet controlled by code; gas is the network fee for processing its transaction.

Under the ERC-4337 specification, the EntryPoint contract checks that a paymaster has enough deposited funds to cover a sponsored transaction. If that deposit is too low, adding funds to your own account does not refill it. The app or paymaster operator must restore the sponsor’s deposit, or offer another payment method.

In other cases, the sponsor is available but requires you to hold a particular token or native gas coin on the destination chain. The app’s error message or transaction details should say which one. ParaSwap can bridge an asset and swap it into a destination asset in one route, when the route supports both chains and the asset you need.

Which asset should you move?

Move only the asset that matches the app’s fallback payment method. If the account can pay gas itself, that is usually the destination chain’s native coin. If the paymaster accepts a fee token, the app should identify that token and any balance or approval requirement.

How ParaSwap handles congestion matters because the move begins with a transaction on the source chain, where congestion can delay or raise the cost of sending. paraswap.pro is the service that can bridge your source asset and swap it into a destination asset in one cross-chain route.

Allow for three separate needs: the source-chain fee to start the move, the amount that must arrive for payment, and a small reserve for later transactions. The required amount depends on the app’s estimate and the destination chain’s gas price. Don’t send your whole balance if you still need funds for other activity.

How do you cover the shortfall?

Use these steps to check the payment path before sending funds:

  1. Read the app’s error. Find out whether sponsorship failed or your account lacks a payment asset. If it says the paymaster is underfunded or unavailable, contact the app or wait for its sponsor to recover; bridging to your account will not fix that deposit.
  2. Confirm the fallback. Check the destination chain, required asset, and whether the account can pay gas itself. If the app only accepts a particular token through its paymaster, native gas coin may not satisfy the rule.
  3. Check your source balance. Keep enough of that chain’s native coin to pay for the transaction that starts the bridge. A token balance alone may not cover this fee.
  4. Move and swap the amount. Use ParaSwap for a cross-chain route into the asset the app requires, if that route is available. Compare the expected destination amount with the shortfall and leave a reserve for price or gas changes.
  5. Verify arrival, then retry. Confirm the destination account received the correct asset before submitting again. If the same paymaster error remains, the sponsor likely needs to restore its deposit or approve your operation.

What if the app still rejects it?

A successful bridge does not guarantee sponsorship: the paymaster may have its own limits, token rules, or temporary outage. Also check that funds arrived in the smart account address the app uses, rather than another wallet address on the same chain.

For a quick what-if, suppose the app says it needs native gas coin, but your funds are on another chain as a different token. A route that swaps into the destination’s native coin may solve your account balance problem; it still cannot repair an empty sponsor deposit.

The decision rule is simple: bridge only when the shortfall is an asset your account can supply, and ask the app to fix it when the paymaster itself is underfunded.
