Image to 3D for Unity: what to check before importing an AI-generated model

AI image-to-3D tools are useful when you treat the output as a first draft, not as a finished Unity asset.

The practical workflow is simple:

  1. start with one clear source image;
  2. generate a first 3D model;
  3. export GLB or OBJ;
  4. inspect the mesh in a viewer;
  5. import the model into Unity only after the shape is coherent enough to test.

The biggest mistake is assuming that a good web preview means the asset is ready for a game scene. Unity exposes different problems: scale, pivot position, material setup, collider shape, texture behavior, mesh density, and whether the object still makes sense from side and rear views.

GLB or OBJ?

Use GLB when you want a compact handoff with geometry and materials traveling together. It is often the easiest first test for browser previews or quick engine checks.

Use OBJ when the next step is cleanup in Blender or another DCC tool before Unity. OBJ is not as convenient for packed materials, but it is still a practical mesh handoff.

Use STL only when the goal is 3D printing. STL is not a good format for Unity scenes because it does not carry PBR materials or textures.

What I check before importing

Before importing an AI-generated model into Unity, I check:

  • whether the object is one coherent mesh or several disconnected fragments;
  • whether the silhouette works from more than the front view;
  • whether the file size is reasonable for the intended scene;
  • whether materials are simple enough to replace or clean up;
  • whether the model needs Blender cleanup first;
  • whether a collider can be built without strange gaps;
  • whether the result is useful as a blockout, prop draft, or reference model.

This is where image-to-3D tools can help: they make fast visual drafts. They should not be described as automatic production-ready game asset pipelines.

The honest use case is a quick first model that helps you decide whether the idea is worth refining.
