This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass
What I Built
FloraTouch is an interactive, open-source AI agent created to help developers and tech enthusiasts step away from screen fatigue, get outdoors, and connect with nature ("touch grass").
Instead of staying glued to a monitor, FloraTouch encourages users to explore outdoor plants, observe their local greenery, and get personalized care and diagnostic advice.
Key features include:
- Prompts for mindful nature breaks and outdoor observation.
- Diagnosis and practical guidance on sunlight, soil, and watering needs.
- Lightweight botanical assistance powered entirely by open-source AI models.

- Photo Customization: Choose from botanical presets, upload localβ¦
How I Built It
FloraTouch is built with Python, focusing on modularity, open weights, and lightweight inference:
- Open-Source AI Models: Leveraged open-weight LLMs accessed via Hugging Face Inference API / router endpoints.
- Agent Architecture: Developed Python-based orchestration and structured prompt flows to handle plant diagnostic sessions and personalized care recommendations.
-
Environment & Security: Configured clean virtual environments with
.envhandling for API secrets and streamlined CLI input/output.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation and open-weight models give developers true autonomy and foster inclusive technology:
- No Vendor Lock-In: Developers maintain complete control over the prompts, inference pipelines, and model architecture.
- Privacy by Design: Allows sensitive user location or gardening log data to transition toward edge/local execution without forced cloud telemetry.
- Collaborative Improvement: Communities can fine-tune and improve models using local flora datasets from different climates across the globe.
