Copy trading is the fastest on-ramp for crypto beginners — but most people get it wrong. They click the trader with the highest return and get wrecked by the hidden drawdown.
Here's what actually matters before you copy anyone on OKX.
Spot vs futures copy trading
Start with spot copy trading — no leverage, no liquidation risk, and it can auto-rebalance to match the lead trader's portfolio. Futures copy trading can liquidate you if the trader blows up.
How to pick a lead trader (ignore the top return)
| Metric | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Max drawdown | below 30% |
| Days led | 90+ days |
| Win rate | read together with profit/loss ratio |
| 90-day PnL% | above 20% |
| Copy AUM | real scale, not an empty shell |
A high win rate doesn't mean profit: win 10 times for 1% each, lose once for 10%, and you're still down.
Set your own parameters and stop-loss
- Fixed amount per trade: keep it under 5% of your copy budget
- Follow 2-3 traders with different styles
- Always set your own total stop-loss (30-50%) — never rely on the trader's
How profit sharing really works
Lead traders take 5%-30% of profits, but only on your net profit — your previous losses are recovered first, and losing trades don't count. On top of that you still pay normal trading fees, and slippage eats into returns.
Copy trading isn't passive income — it's delegating the judgment, not the risk.
