Native Passkeys Revolutionize VicRoads App Security

The myVicRoads iOS and Android apps have set a new standard in secure mobile authentication by introducing native passkeys, enabling over one million Victorians to benefit from streamlined and phishing-resistant biometric logins. With a remarkable 80% activation rate on mobile web, this rollout showcases how public services can lead the way in digital identity protection, especially against escalating threats like SMS phishing and password fatigue.

Corbado’s Role in Seamless Passkey Integration

At Corbado, we’re proud to have partnered with VicRoads to deliver this cutting-edge passkey experience. Leveraging our native SDKs, the myVicRoads team was able to integrate passkey authentication in weeks rather than months, directly utilizing Apple’s AuthenticationServices framework for iOS and Android’s Credential Manager API. This approach ensures a truly native, secure and intuitive user interface, while utilizing local device biometric features for maximum protection.

Optimized User Experience Across iOS and Android

The passkey login experience has been carefully designed for both major platforms to maximize usability and security:

  • On iOS, users can authenticate using a system modal, autofill above the keyboard, or after entering their identifier. Prompts for passkey creation are built into the flow, making future logins even more seamless.
  • On Android, users can log in via a Credential Manager bottom sheet or after identifier submission, with clear prompts encouraging passkey adoption.

Account management is straightforward: app settings allow users to easily view, add or remove passkeys, supporting both accessibility and control.

Enterprise-Grade Analytics and Adoption Tools

Our enterprise passkey platform was instrumental in this rollout, providing VicRoads with advanced analytics, controlled release management and funnel analysis to monitor and optimize passkey adoption. These features enabled a smooth, data-driven transition to passwordless security, with adoption rates far surpassing industry averages. The success of this project is even featured in a FIDO Alliance case study: A testament to its impact on Australian cybersecurity.

Raising the Bar for Secure Digital Credentials

The native passkey implementation not only enhances security for digital driver licences but also addresses the broader need for secure, user-friendly authentication in public sector apps. By adopting phishing-resistant, biometric-based login methods, myVicRoads demonstrates how government services can proactively protect user data while improving the overall experience.
