The Limitations of Computer Vision in Low-Light Environments
Contrary to popular belief, computer vision technology is not yet capable of accurately recognizing faces in low-light conditions. Even with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, faces can be misidentified or distorted in environments with limited illumination.
The Challenges
There are several reasons why computer vision struggles in low-light conditions:
- Variations in Skin Texture: Human skin comes in a wide range of tones, textures, and colors. In low-light environments, the subtle differences in skin texture can become exaggerated, making it difficult for computer vision algorithms to accurately identify individuals.
- Expression and Emotion: Facial expressions and emotions can also impact the accuracy of face recognition in low-light conditions. For example, a person's face may appear distorted or unevenly lit, making it harder for computer vision to recognize their features.
