This is exactly the problem I'm having with the Microsoft RDP iPad app and my Ubuntu 24.04 desktop. Unfortunately, the iPad app has no feature to import/export configurations, so it looks like I'm out of luck. I considered changing the default system display from :0 to :1, but it's a lot more difficult to do that today than it was 35 years ago with X11R3.
I'll assume that Microsoft intentionally made their app non-interoperable with Linux, because that's the sort of thing they've always done.
I suspect that it's actually Ubuntu or GNOME's implementation of RDP that's the issue. It's possible that they are using OpenRDP or another open source RDP solution which doesn't work 1-to-1 with Windows RDP, hence requiring the redirection that we set as true in this guide.
This fix worked for me too, thanks a lot!
In my case, the exported RDP file works when I open it directly, but after importing it back into the Microsoft Windows App it fails again with the same error. What solved it for me was deleting the saved credentials for that connection and adding them again, then it connects normally.
